SYRIA – UPDATE - HOMS ASSAULT CONTINUES

Activists say at least twelve people have been killed and over 100 injured in Homs today when it came under intense bombardment from government forces; it is reported as the heaviest bombardment for some days.  

Reports are that there is an increase in government forces around Homs, raising concerns of a possible ground assault on the Baba Amr district.

ISRAELI POLICE ON HIGH ALERT NEAR THE AL-AQSA MOSQUE

Israeli police are on high alert near the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City amid fears of clashes between Muslim and Jewish groups. 

Several Muslim groups have reportedly called people to protect the area after Jewish right-wing extremists announced they intended to visit the Mosque. 

Additional police forces have been deployed to the area, with fifteen vans of riot police reported near the Mughrabi ramp and Western Wall area. 

Disturbances broke out inside the al-Aqsa mosque compound on 19 February 2012 when police fired tear gas at Palestinians who were throwing stones at tourists and security forces there; unconfirmed reports indicated that Palestinians had been targeting religious Jews who entered the site among a group of Christian tourists.
